The Friends of River Farm

Becoming a volunteer at River Farm means becoming a part of a special group of people in your community working to educate and inspire people of all ages to become successful, environmentally responsible gardeners. Volunteering provides unique opportunities to enrich your gardening knowledge and experience. It also allows you to participate in the restoration and preservation of River Farm.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Horticulture - Assist the AHS staff with garden tasks; including data collection of plant collections.

  • Tours - Provide tours and interpretive walks for children and adults, revealing the hidden and not-so-hidden wonders in the process.

  • Special Events - Participate in the planning and staffing of the AHS public events.

  • Administrative Projects - Assist the AHS staff in a variety of office tasks.

  • Education - Help lead children's activities in the Children's Garden or help enhance and maintain the Children’s Garden.

  • Creative Support - Provide the AHS with artistic support; design, photographic, and musical, etc.

  • Library and Visitor Center - Assist the AHS in creating, cataloging, and staffing a horticultural library. Greet visitors from all over the world and help them with their research.

  • Technology - Assist the AHS in creating and monitoring web-based sites.

  • Maintenance - Help the AHS with many building maintenance tasks.

While you do not need to be a member of the AHS to volunteer, for those volunteers who are, the AHS offers a special National Capital Area (NCA) volunteer group. These members collectively provide a regional perspective for this national organization. As ambassadors for the AHS in the Washington metropolitan area, the NCA has a direct and significant influence on the organization’s mission and goals. Members share a commitment to our regional community, promote active and healthy lifestyles, embrace lifelong learning, engage in social networking, and strive to protect the environment. Together, the NCA provides the AHS with a wide array of resources and talents that are unavailable in any other way. The Society values this contribution and in return, strives to offer each NCA member a satisfying, productive, and rewarding experience.

An AHS/NCA membership includes all AHS member benefits, plus:

  • Ways to improve your gardening knowledge through hands-on experience working alongside AHS staff and other volunteers

  • Opportunities to meet and build friendships with like-minded garden enthusiasts in our area

  • An invitation to join us and be recognized during the annual AHS Holiday Reception

  • Invitations to join us for day tours and special events for AHS members only.  Suggestions are welcome.
