New Book: The American Horticultural Society
Encyclopedia of Perennials

Alexandria, VA - September 5, 2006

In mid-September, the American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Perennials will be released by DK Publishing. It combines thousands of beautiful, close-up plant portraits, along with detailed horticultural information and planting suggestions for more than 6,000 individual species and cultivars—including the newest introductions. It is the most up-to-date, colorful, and comprehensive guide to perennials available in North America. The book includes contributions from a team of over 40 perennial plant experts under the expert guidance of Editor-in-Chief Graham Rice and Contributing Editor Kurt Bluemel.

Graham Rice is a well-known plantsman and author whose writing has won him admiration on both sides of the Atlantic. He has published over 20 books, including five on perennials. He has won five awards for garden writing, three in the United States. Graham writes for a wide range of magazines and newspapers, and judges at the world famous Chelsea Flower Show as well as serving on a number of Royal Horticultural Society committees and judging trials of perennials. He divides his time between Britain and the United States.

Kurt Bluemel is a renowned plantsman and designer who has championed the use of ornamental grasses and herbaceous perennials in the American landscape. Kurt is the founder and CEO of Kurt Bluemel, Inc., a 40-year old company with nurseries and landscape design services in Maryland and Florida. Kurt has expanded the palette of perennials available to American gardeners by introducing hundreds of exciting new plants. Among the cultivars he personally selected, are Eupatorium purpureum ‘Gateway’, Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’, and Molinia litoralis ‘Skyracer’.
