  Annual Seed Exchange

Exchanging seeds is one of the time-honored ways in which gardeners share the bounty of their gardens and experience with others. Since 1959, the American Horticultural Society has sponsored and coordinated a seed exchange among its members so that gardeners throughout North America have an opportunity to try growing a wide variety of new and heirloom plants.

In addition to the many uncommon and rare seeds donated by individual AHS members, seeds offered through the exchange also include many that come from botanical gardens and from plants growing at the AHS’s River Farm headquarters.

The program works like this: Each fall we remind members to collect seeds from their gardens and send them in to us. Seed for the exchange must be received at AHS by November 1. Once all the seeds are in, AHS staff members, interns, and volunteers compile a list of the submitted seeds along with information about how to grow and care for them. The seed list and order form are then posted in the members-only area of the AHS website at the beginning of January.

All AHS members can order seeds from the exchange, but those members who donate seeds get first choice when ordering. This can be an advantage because some rare or uncommon seeds can be in short supply. There is no charge to order seeds, but a donation is requested to cover the costs of shipping and handling.
