AHS Travel-Study Program Garden Tours

The AHS travel program is being expanded to include some wonderful national trips, as well as international travel, of course.

Our 2008 calendar is currently in transition as we build our schedule, however we are pleased to announce that the first AHS National Travel Program trip will be to Asheville, North Carolina, in April of 2008.

We are working on additional US trips. Our schedule will be updated regularly as trips are added. If you would like us to consider one of your favorite parts of the U.S., please let us know at ahsnationaltravel@ahs.org.

    April 10-17, 2008
    AHS Host, David Ellis

The orchid is the national flower of Costa Rica. This country has the richest orchid flora in Central America, with more than 1,400 identified species. The greatest diversity exists in misty mid-elevation cloud forests where they are abundant as tropical epiphytes. This trip will focus on orchids in nature and in gardens, both public and private, without ignoring the wonderful flora and fauna of the area, of course!

    AHS Host: Deane Hundley

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the confluence of the Swannonoa and French Broad Rivers, Asheville has long been recognized as one of the top travel destinations in the world. Asheville sits on a plateau surrounded by mountains and rivers on all sides, and the scenery is spectacular. The city is known for the lavish Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned home in America, which attracts over a million visitors each year. Our hotel, the Grove Park Inn, is an important example of architecture and design of the Arts and Crafts movement. Along with touring some of the fabulous public gardens in Asheville, we have been invited by generous garden owners to share their beautiful private gardens.

This trip includes visits to an exceptional array of private gardens, which range from Overbury Court, residence of Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Blossom, to Jennigsbury Farm, residence of Mr. & Mrs. Barry Fox. Not neglected are several of the classic English gardens, which include Hidcote Manor, created by American Lawrence Johnston, and perhaps the best of English gardens, Beth Chatto near Colchester. Additionally, the trip will include drinks and dinner at a private opening of Sudely Castle, as well as a kind invitation by Michael Mates, a Member of Parliament, for a private visit to the Houses of Parliament and drinks and dinner in one of the Member's private dinning rooms.

This really is the best of Scotland! Highlights of our visit include the Botanic Garden in Glasgow, the gardens at Gargunnock House, and the Crarae Gardens, recently rescued by the National Trust for Scotland. We’ll walk through the amazing Pitmedden Gardens - the heart of the property is the formal walled garden originally laid out in 1675 by Sir Alexander Seton, and of course we’ll tour Scotland’s premier garden, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. We’ll stay at several castles and fine houses, each with it’s own personality, views and gardens. For further information, please write to mary@hiddentreasuresbotanicaltours.com.
